Fred William Johnson, 92, of Norcross died March 4, 2011. Born in Gainesville in 1918, he settled in Norcross after the war in 1945, living in the home he built with his wife of 63 years, Margaret Dean Johnson.He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife who passed away in 2007. His survivors include his son, Thomas Harlan Johnson; daughter, Mary Louise Ashmore; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.Fred was the seventh generation Johnson to serve his country in arms beginning with his third great-grandfather, Daniel Johnson, who served with George Washington in the French and Indian Wars and including his great-grandfather Col. Ephraim Malone Johnson, one of the founders of Gainesville. The original home place was on land between the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers bordering the Cherokee Indian Nation. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II, as a tech sergeant and flight engineer/tail gunner on B-24 Liberator Bombers. Assigned to the 30th Bomb Group of 7th Air Force, he saw aerial combat in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Among his commendations was the Air Medal for meritorious and heroic service in aerial combat.Following the war, he began work at Bell Bomber Corporation in Marietta which subsequently became a Lockheed Corporation plant. During his 30 plus years at Lockheed, he worked as a hydraulic research mechanic and was involved with the three major military airlift programs, C-130, C-141 and the C-5A aircraft. As a 65 year resident of Norcross, he was a member of the First Baptist Church where he taught a men's Bible study class during the 1960s. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at Peachtree Memorial Park in Norcross. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at Crowell Brothers Funeral Home, Norcross.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Norcross, 706 North Peachtree Street, Norcross, Georgia 30071.Online condolences may be expressed at www.crowellbrothers.com.Arrangements by Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home, 5051 Peachtree Ind.
