COHOES Fred A. Johnson, 75, died Friday, November 9, 2012 at his residence.Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Walter T. Johnson and Erma Rankin Johnson.Raised and educated in Lansingburgh, he was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School, class of 1955. Mr. Johnson was employed at Norton Company, the former Behr-Manning located in Watervliet, for 39 years, retiring in 1994 as Supervisor of Office Services. Fred became the Marketing Manager for Adirondack-Champlain Guide Service located in Willsboro, NY in 1995. A position he thoroughly enjoyed and held until the time of his death. The owners of the business became his second family and he loved spending time with them in the Adirondacks. He served in the Army and the reserve from 1960-1966. He was a member of the prestigious Adirondack Forty-Sixer climbing club (#1788) and the Adirondack Mountain Club. He had served on the Executive Committee of the Forty-Sixers and was responsible for designing many of their promotional items. He was a member of the Troy YMCA for over 35 years, where he served on the Board of Directors. He received the Lay Person of the Year award from the Troy YMCA in 1983. Fred was a prominent area athlete playing softball, basketball, racquetball and bowling on many area teams. He was a high school varsity basketball official and was an ardent fisherman. He was a volunteer worker for the Troy Patriots Pop Warner Football organization. He was an accomplished photographer and had put slide programs on at SUNY and many other area locations. He also enjoyed writing and doing graphic art projects on his computer, putting together a series of books about life that contained many of his photographs.Fred enjoyed life to the very end and thought of it as a continuously unfolding miracle whether it was climbing a remote mountain or trying to capture the celestial beams of a sunrise at dawn in a photograph. He truly loved being outdoors. Fred was blessed with natural ability in any particular field, but strived tirelessly to excel in every adventure he undertook. He was not satisfied to just participating, he wanted and needed to be the very best he could be. He was never married, but was devoted to the children of his sister, brothers and his nephew's children as he grew older. Everyone called him Uncle Fred.Survivors include his sister Marylyn J. Gully (Harry) of Lansingburgh, nephews and nieces Michael Gully (Sharon), Mary Gully, the late Mark J. Gully (Kathleen Gully-Scott), Jeffrey Johnson (Beth), Eric Johnson, Holly Johnson, Michelle Johnson, great nieces and nephews, Sarah and Michael, Jr. Gully, Josh and Seth Gully, Ian, Emilee, Ryan Johnson and Kyle Johnson, a sister in law Linda Johnson.Fred was predeceased by his two brothers Richard L. Johnson and Robert D. Johnson and sister in law JoAnne Johnson.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home, corner of 109th Street and Third Avenue, Lansingburgh, with Rev. E. Allen Siebold officiating.Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers Fred's family requests donations in his memory be sent to the Cohoes Community Center, 22-40 Remsen St., Cohoes, NY 12047.
