Francis X. Moriarty longtime resident of Lowell; 85 Lowell Francis X. Moriarty, 85, a well respected former principal, teacher and member of the Lowell educational community, and a longtime resident of the Belvidere section of the City, died Monday evening at the Blaire House in Tewksbury surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Margaret (Luz) Moriarty with whom he recently celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary on November 22, 2008. Born in Lowell, December 19, 1923, the son of the late Joseph W. and the late Margaret L. (Mills) Moriarty, he attended Lowell Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1941. After high school, Mr. Moriarty entered the Franciscan Seminary at Graymoor in Newburgh, NY where he became a Franciscan Brother. Later, he left the Franciscan Order to pursue his education at Boston College. In 1951, he graduated from Boston College with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Mr. Moriarty began his career in education as a teacher of Latin and English at the Moody Junior High School where he also played an instrumental role in the creation of the City of Lowell Adult Education Program. He was then appointed Principal of the Molloy School. Later, he was named Principal of the Peter W. Reilly School where he served for over 25 years and oversaw the physical expansion of the School. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member the Holy Name Society of his parish. A member of several religious and fraternal organizations, he was a 50 year member of both the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Lowell and the Knights of Columbus. A member of the Boston College Alumni Association, he was also a member of the Mass Retired Teachers Association and the Retired Educators Association of Mass. Besides his wife, Mr. Moriarty is survived by his daughter, Dr. Martha A. Moriarty Gaedcke and her husband Donald of Beaufort, SC; two sons, Jonathan F. Moriarty and his wife Gail of Danville, NH and Dr. Timothy F. X. Moriarty of Altamonte Springs, FL; two grandchildren, Kathryne Moriarty and Connor P. Moriarty both of Danville, NH; a sister in law, Alice Farley and a brother in law, Joseph Luz both of Lowell. He was also the brother of the late William Moriarty, the late Judith Pacheco, the late Raymond Moriarty, the late Robert Moriarty, and the late Mary Gail Graham. Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 3 to 7pm Friday. His Funeral will take place from the Funeral Home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock followed by a Funeral Mass at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH at 11 o'clock. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
