Francis G. "Mac" McGovern, 87, Charlotte Harbor, died Oct. 9, 2004. He was born April 9, 1917, in Bristol, R.I. He was a resident of South Port Square but was temporarily housed at Beneva Lakes Nursing Home in Sarasota following Hurricane Charley. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. Upon completion of Officer Training School, he served as a captain in the Pacific theater. He graduated with a B.S. in accounting from Providence College and earned an MBA from Boston College and a Ph.D in economics from Ohio State University. After a brief career in private industry, he taught economics at the University of Dayton in Ohio. In 1966, he moved to Indiana, Pa., as chairman of the economics department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and later served as the dean of arts and sciences and also the dean of the graduate school. He retired in 1981 and moved to Port Charlotte the following year. Continuing his interest in education, he was one of the core committee members who founded the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center as a nature educational center for Charlotte County and remained president emeritus. Survivors include a son, Glenn of Xenia, Ohio; a daughter, Kathryn Long of Lewistown, Pa.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel, is in charge.
