Francis Emile ChartrandApril 23, 1942 – September 3, 2014Francis (Frank Sr.) Emile Chartrand of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, passed away at the age of 72, after a seven year courageous battle with cancer, with his wife Florence fighting by his side. He was born to Esther and Salomon Chartrand, the youngest child of sixteen children. He did most of his growing years in the Métis community of Camperville, Manitoba, where he enjoyed the company of many of his nieces and nephews, who called him Uncle, even though many of them were older than he was! At a young age, Frank developed a burning desire to learn to play the guitar as the fire and love of music had enveloped his heart and soul. He taught himself to play the guitar and during his life, he was able to sing, from memory, more than 500 songs. It was this incredible talent that has become his legacy and he is known throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba for his music. When he met his wife Florence, more than 48 years ago, he was performing every weekend at the Winnipeg Hotel, where he continued to play after their marriage for more than 15 years. In 1980, he moved his little family to Saskatoon and introduced his unique style of music to an entirely new audience, who became captivated with his amazing voice. He inspired his son and daughter to become musicians and for 16 years, the Chartrand Family Band played at numerous clubs, Legions, weddings and dances, all over Saskatchewan. Although music was his main love, he also enjoyed walking whenever and wherever he could; loved to hunt and fish with his special friend and brother-in-law Gary Jacobson and spend time with his close friend Wally Larivere. Frank was a very intelligent man who could speak four different languages and who proudly obtained his GED at 35. He continued on with the pursuit of knowledge and education. He was self taught in many areas and could talk to anyone about any subject with wit and with his own special brand of humour and honesty. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife Florence; his daughter Karen (Keith) Honeyman; his son Frank Jr. (Donna) Chartrand; his grandchildren AnneMarie (Melisia), Sage (Jenny), Skylar (Simon), Jaina (Rylie); his great-grandbaby Ayla Marie Florence Fitzgerald; his two sisters Rose (Gary) Jacobson, Florence (Ed) Hein and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Please join us, as we celebrate his life and memories on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. for Prayers and Monday, September 8, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. for the Service.
