Frances Herrington Smith, 86, of Hinesville passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, at home with family by her side after a long illness.Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 15, 1927 to the late Glenn Willard and Aurelia Roberta "Ollie" (Rogers) Herrington in Waynesboro. She moved to Hawkinsville at an early age and graduated from Hawkinsville High. Mrs. Smith received her bachelor's of science degree in education from Georgia Teacher's College, now known as Georgia Southern University. In 1946, she married the late Thomas Jennings Smith and they made Hinesville their home.Mrs. Smith taught in the public school system for more than 41 years and retired in 1989. She was a three-time president of the Georgia Association of Educators. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church, the Friendship Fidelity Sunday School Class where she assisted in teaching, a member of the Jubilee Singers Adult Choir and the Goldenheirs. She was a master bridge player and teacher with memberships in the American Contract Bridge League and a local bridge club. Mrs. Smith was a charter member and former president of the Moonflower Garden Club, member of the VFW, American Legion, life member of the Purple Heart and Disabled American Veteran auxiliaries. She was a former member of the Cherokee Rose Country Club, YMCA and a Pink Lady Volunteer at Liberty Regional, who also volunteered with the March of Dimes for more than 25 years.Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and John Hayes of Carnesville; brother, Thomas Herrington of Hawkinsville; grandson and wife, Justin W. and Andrea Smith; granddaughters, Katherine Lee Hayes and Ashley C. Hayes; great-grandchildren, Dylan Craig Smith and Gavin Thomas Smith; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington.Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 24, at Hinesville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Broughman and the Rev. Steve Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Flemington Presbyterian Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Paul Zechman, Glen Herrington, Scott Crump, Peter Jones, Christopher Foster, Eddie Smith, Steve Sikes and Gill Sikes. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Herrington, Harry Joe Dasher, Dennis Grice, Clay Sikes, members of Friendship Fidelity Sunday School Class, Bridge Club and Canasta Club Members, Red Hats and Goldenheirs.The family has requested that remembrances be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 220 E. Memorial Dr., Hinesville, GA 31313.Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
