OBITUARY FRANCES LOUISE MONTGOMERY On Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Unitarian House in Ottawa, her home for the past 16 years. She was born in Sawyerville, Qc. ninety-six years ago, a daughter of Richard William and Edith Adams Montgomery. Her paternal grandfather and father were proprietors of a general store in Sawyerville for over 50 years. Frances pioneered in the field of social work. Her professional career spanned 45 years in the cities of Montreal, Halifax and Ottawa. It also included international work in the USA and with the United Nations in Iran. She was a caring and dedicated social worker and teacher. Beginning in 1928, Frances was a student worker for six years while studying for her Diploma in Social Work and her Bachelor of Arts degree at McGill University. During this time she lived as a staff member in two Settlement Houses, in the Old Brewery Mission Community Center and in Saint Columba House. Before the days of public relief, she was employed in private and quasi-public social agencies giving marital counseling, assistance to single mothers and financial help to families. While studying for her Graduate degree (Master of Social Work) at the University of Pennsylvania (1942-1944), Frances was again a student worker in the Children's Aid agencies of Norristown and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Frances then returned to Montreal for three years (1944-1947) where she was Assistant Professor of Social Work at McGill University. In 1947 Frances moved to Halifax where she was Assistant Director of the Maritime School of Social Work. She was responsible for the field placement of students and taught casework in both years of the program. In 1958 Frances had a year's leave of absence during which she served as a Social Welfare training expert with the United Nations in Iran for the Iranian Department of Labour. It was at the end of this year that the Shah decreed there would be a School of Social Work established at the University of Tehran. In 1959-60 Frances returned to the University of Pennsylvania School of Social work for another year of graduate study. During the year she worked for the Social Services Department of Baltimore City supervising six staff members in the Children's Department. She received an Advanced Curriculum Certificate in Supervision from the University. In 1961 until her retirement from the Public Service of Canada in 1973, Frances was a senior program officer with the Emergency Welfare Services Division of what was then the Department of National Health and Welfare. Her sister Irene Wark Montgomery of Montreal and latterly of Ottawa, died in 2000 at Unitarian House in her ninety-seventh year. Her brother Hart Adams Montgomery, owner and operator of a store in Lennoxville, Qc, passed away in 1962. She will be missed by her younger sister, Jean McNeece Wright, wife of Dr. James R. Wright, who lives in Chester, Nova Scotia and her seven nieces and nephews and their families to whom she was very close since the time they shared vacations at their summer camps on lake Memphremagog. Her brother's children, Roger Montgomery, Diane Devitt, Jane Kidney, Richard Montgomery, and Hugh Montgomery live in Sandwich, Maine, Charlottetown, P.E.I., Nashville, Tennessee, Sydney, Australia, and Montreal respectively. Her sister Jean's son, James Wright, lives in Toronto and her daughter, Jill Hamilton, lives in Halifax. She will also be missed by her Goddaughter Tanya Galt McLeod, of Alymer, Quebec, her godson, Oliver Sowton, of Winchester, England, her long-time friend, Bryan Wannop of Ottawa, and by Mrs. Lynda Gauthier of Ottawa, Frances' personal support worker for the last 10 years who has provided exceptional care. A Memorial Service will be held January 16, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Unitarian House, 20 Cleary Avenue, Ottawa, ON. Inurnment will take place at Malvern Cemetery in Lennoxville where 3 generations of the Montgomery / Adams families are buried.
