Evelyn Smith "Sonny" Carter made her transition on Jan. 13, 2011. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Whigham Funeral Home, 580 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd,, Newark. Interment is in Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Visitation is on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. A lifelong resident of Newark, N.J., Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Southside High School. She was a retired enrollment specialist for Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.J., (formerly The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of N.J.). She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Lester Carter, and a host of special friends.
