Evelyn-M. Johnson, born in 1903, spouse of Bertill-W. Johnson, mother of Beverly, Frank, Shirley J, Fla and Beverly A, died on March 15, 2010 at 106 years old.
Evelyn M. (Olson) Johnson, at the age of 106 years, died peacefully March 15, 2010, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Frank Larson. She was born in Cranston, R.I., Aug. 25, 1903. She moved to Quincy when she was married in 1924. She lived in Quincy for 75 years before moving to Eastham in 2000. She was a member of the Covenant Church of Quincy, where she was very active until her move to Eastham. On the Cape, she had been attending the Eastham United Methodist Church. For nearly 25 years, she worked as a bookkeeper for Mathewson Machine Corporation in North Quincy, retiring at the age of 75. She was a past Matron of the former Virginia Chapter No. 196 Order of the Eastern Star, Dorchester. She had also been an active member of the Senior Group at Beachwood-on-the-Bay in North Quincy and was a former board member of the P.S.S.B. These past years in Eastham she had attended and enjoyed the monthly Friday morning programs presented by the Eastham C.O.A. In the spring of 2006, she was presented with the Boston Post Cane and was recognized as Easthams oldest resident. She was very proud of that honor. She had a remarkable memory and was a great correspondent. She loved remembering folks on their special days or while they were recovering from illness. Her cards always included a joke, poem, cartoon or quiz. The wife of the late Bertill W. Johnson, she is survived by two daughters, Shirley J. Doppler (Mrs. Leonard) of Naples, Fla., and Beverly A. Larson (Mrs. Frank) of Eastham; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Covenant Church of Quincy, Whitwell Street, Quincy, Thursday, April 8, at 1 p.m. Burial will be private at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her honor may be sent to the Memorial Fund of the Covenant Church of Quincy, 115 Whitwell St., Quincy, MA 02169.
