Evelyn Johnson, age 93, of Holt, Fla., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. She was born on Oct. 15, 1919, in Uriah, Ala., to Monroe and Alice Chunn. Evelyn retired from Holt Elementary School as a Kindergarten teacher. She worked for 30 years teaching many children on different grade levels and received a number of awards and recognitions throughout her career including earning her master's degree in Education. Evelyn was a member of First Baptist Church of Holt where she was a Sunday School teacher, taught children's choir and also sang in the choir. She also loved creating flower arrangements for the front of the church every Sunday using flowers from her own garden. Most of all, Evelyn was best at mothering and grandmothering. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William "Buck" Johnson; four brothers; and one sister. Survivors include her sons, Andy Johnson and wife, Debbie, of Holt, and David Alan Johnson and wife, Harriet, of Pace; brothers, Cornell Chun and wife, Della, of Uriah, and Wallace Chunn and wife, Margie, of Mobile, Ala.; grandchildren, Jeremy Johnson and wife, Natalie, Magen Steele and husband, Brad, Ashley Johnson, Chris Johnson and Bekah Johnson; great-grandchildren, Devin Johnson, Ella Johnson, Javier Steele, Lexi and Tyler Tucker, and Sara Martinez; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. A time of visitation will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m., at First Baptist Church Holt. The service will take place Friday, May 31, 2013, at 4 p.m., at the church with burial to follow at New Holt Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview.
