Obituary of Evelyn-J. Carter


Evelyn J. Carter, 86     PORTLAND -- Evelyn J. Carter, 86, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2007, at Cedars nursing facility.     Evelyn was born on Dec. 7, 1920, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of Harry and Eugenie (St. Pierre) Randall and was educated in Salem and Westbrook schools. [ Stepfather, Joseph LaBrecque ] She moved to Westbrook at age 13.     She worked as a riveter at the South Portland Shipyard during WWII, following the lead of Rosie the Riveter to support U.S. war efforts. Evelyn was employed in retail at Rine's Brothers and later, Jordan Marsh until her retirement.     She enjoyed reading, gardening and homemaking.     Besides her husband, Leslie Carter of South Portland, she leaves her sister, Lorraine McGrath of South Portland; daughter, Carol-Ann Cass of Nashua, N.H.; granddaughters, Leanne Hudson of Trumbull, Conn., Suellen Goodwin of Nashua, N.H., and Julianne McCullum of Hoover, Ala.; grandson, Robert C. Hudson Jr. of Raymond; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.     Visiting hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. service on Wednesday, March 28, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Interment will be at St. Hyacinth Cemetery, Westbrook.    Evelyn J. Carter
