ONEIDA >> Evelyn F. Hayes Burgess, 76, formerly of Rome, passed away on Jan. 18, 2015 at the Lutheran Care Home in Clinton. She was born July 13, 1938, in Rome, the daughter of Theodore and Arleigh Turner Ballard. She was a graduate of Rome Free Academy, Class of 1955. On June 20, 1964, she married Floyd (Stub) Hayes in Lee Center Methodist Church. He passed away in 1989. She later married Norman Burgess. He passed away in 2007.Evelyn worked at Rome Cable Corp. for over 20 years. She was a member of the New London Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Evelyn is survived by: four daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Kevin Larsen of Oneida, Jeanne and Robert Turnure, of King George, Va., Marilyn and Jeff McFadden of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Rev. Cindy and Peter Makarchuk of Sherrill; two sons, Charles Hayes, of Spencer, Mass., and Jody Hayes of Taberg; two brothers, James Ballard of Holland Patent, and Jody (Cathy) White of Taberg; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Henry Hayes, and a granddaughter, Christine Hayes. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 6 p.m. at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. Interment will take place in Lee Valley Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday prior to the service from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Evelyn's memory may be made to the volunteer fire department or American Legion of your choice.
