NORTHAMPTON - Evelyn C. (Carter) Fortier, 81, of 552 Burts Pit Rd., died Tuesday in Northampton. Born in El Paso, TX, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Doris (Hancock) Carter. She was educated in El Paso and later graduated form the former Mary A. Burnham School in Northampton. She was the bookkeeper for the Western Mass. Bus Co. for 18 years, which her husband John owned. She lived in Orlando, FL and Hatfield, MA before returning to Northampton in 1992. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Northampton. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club. She was a member of the former Zonta Club in Northampton and was a volunteer at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, John F. Fortier, Sr.; a son, John F. Fortier, Jr. of Northampton; 2 daughters, Diane F. Kloc of Altamonte, FL and Elizabeth F. Jones of Kuwait City, Kuwait; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Her sister Doris J. Carter died earlier. The funeral will be Friday morning 9 a.m. from the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Rd., Northampton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 5-7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital, 30 Locust St., Northampton, MA 01060. Published in The Republican on 7/13/2005.
