ABERCROMBIE Evan William Passed away on January 15, 2009 at age 81 after a short illness. Evan was born on September 12, 1927 in Vancouver, B.C. and spent his formative years in West Point Grey, graduating from Lord Byng High School and completing his degree in mechanical engineering at UBC. Upon graduation, Evan moved east to begin his professional career with Alcan in Arvida, P.Q. and later in Toronto. There he met Isobel Angus, another ex-pat westerner with whom he fell in love and married in 1955. Evan and Isobel soon moved to Calgary and started their family, returning to Vancouver in the early sixties. After Isobel's untimely death, Evan married Clara (Gould) and the family moved to Beaconsfield, P.Q. where the youngest of his five children was born. Three years later Evan and Clara returned west, building the family home on West Rockland Road, high on the hill in North Vancouver. These were happy years, and Evan directed his energies to raising his family and building a succession of small companies. Never easy, this work seemed to be most in keeping with Evan's entrepreneurial spirit, generosity and perpetual optimism. Sadly, Clara passed away in 1986 and Evan once again took on the task of reinventing himself. He married Eleanora (Kueber) and retired to Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast. Never idle, Evan was active in the community and church. After divorcing, his last years were spent in Roberts Creek and North Vancouver where he was able to live on his own with the support of family and friends. Evan was predeceased by his parents Phyllis (Bowman) and Bill and brother Robin. He is fondly remembered by his sister Elizabeth (Clark), his children Hugh, Ian, David, Susan (Janz) and Mark, nine grandchildren and countless relations and friends. Evan did not live a life untouched by tragedy. His faith, his spirit and the love of family and friends guided him through the difficult years and made the good years even better. Evan's family would like to thank Dr. Peter Graff and team at Lions Gate Hospital for their exceptional care and kind counsel. A memorial service will be held for Evan at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 220 West 8th Street, North Vancouver, B.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Evan's name to the Clara Gould Abercrombie Memorial Bursary, UBC Development Office, Suite 500, 5950 University Boulevard, Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z3; inquiries - Maryn Ellis (604) 822-5345.
