Obituary of Eugene-A. Lemieux


MANCHESTER, N.H. - Eugene A. Lemieux, 69, an executive with the Association Canado-Americaine Assurance (ACA), died Thursday, April 8, at the Catholic Medical Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Pierrette (Bellemare) Lemieux, to whom he was married for 48 years.He was born in New Bedford, Mass., on Sept. 13, 1934, a son of Antonio and Emelie (Gregoire) Lemieux. He was a resident of Manchester for many years.During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy.Mr. Lemieux was chairman of the board of the ACA, where from 1980 to 2000 he was the president general; from 1979 to 1980, the treasurer general; from 1974 to 1979, the secretary general. He had been a board member since 1969.He received the highest honor ever awarded by ACA: the Commandeur dans l'Ordre de la Legion d'Honneur. He also received an award from the French government: the Chevalier dans l'Orde National du Merite for his work as an officer with the Societe Historique Franco Americaine.Mr. Lemieux was a member of the St. Rosaire Lodge 24 in New Bedford; a board member of the French Institute at Assumption College, the Conseil de la Vie Francaise d'Amerique, the Boy Scouts of America Camp Cachelot and the Sacred Heart Nursing Home in New Bedford; served on the board of directors of St. Mary's Bank since 1991; and was a founding trustee of the Franco American Center.He was the past president of the Action Franco Americaine Nord Est., chairman of the Board of the SMB Foundation from 1994 to 2000, and commissioner of the New Bedford Airport Commission.In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Pierre Lemieux of New Bedford, Bruce Lemieux of Manchester and Eric Lemieux of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four daughters, Pauline Lally of Acushnet, Mass., Louise Loveland of Wainsboro, Pa., Francine Lemieux of Douglasville, Pa., and Dr. Celine Williamson of Gretna, La.; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Alfred Lemieux and Henri Lemieux, both of New Bedford, and Brother Gerard Lemieux CSV of Joliette, Quebec, Canada; three sisters, Therese Vincent of Port Lucy, Fla., Claire Churchill of Southbridge, Mass., and Bernadette Lemieux of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
