Obituary of Ethel-Louise Smith

SMITH, Ethel Louise "Cookie" - Born October 23, 1922 and passed away June 26, 2014 in the General & Marine Hospital in Collingwood. She was born of William and Ethel Booker in Meaford, the older of two daughters. As a young girl she was a self-confessed "tomboy" and pitched softball with such energy that she had a curved right pinky finger. Once graduated from high school, she headed for the big city of Toronto where she lived with her lifelong pal, Flo and worked as a secretary. Pretty adventurous for a girl of eighteen in those days. It wasn't long before Mac, her suitor since she was 17, returned from the war and did what he promised he would do the first time he met beautiful "Cookie" when he was 16... he married her and it stuck for almost 71 years. She might have been named Grace, since she was the picture of grace and beauty. She and Mac had three sons: Robert, Peter and Jeffrey and the rest of her early and mid-life adult years were dedicated to mothering her sons and making a warm and comfortable home for her family. She was an unmovable rock of motherhood. You might say that her only fault was spoiling her sons for life by cooking up the best of everything, often while listening to Procol Harum. Louise was one of the best neighbours you could ever wish for: quiet, generous and a great listener for all who entered her home. She spent her last years living on Georgian Bay, watching the waves and meditating on the water. She found such peace in just watching. And she could work magic with African Violets and Orchids. She is survived by her husband Mac, her three sons, Robert (Judith), Peter, Jeffrey (Katherine) and four grandchildren, Darryl who is living her lifelong dream of going to New Zealand plus Jessi, Alexandra and MacKenzie and two nieces, Nancy and P. Bell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Frank and Jessie Smith, her sister Helen and her beloved dog, Monty. We will respect her wishes for cremation and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the if (!aa) var aa = { iframes : new Array(), random : function() { return Math.round(Math.random() * 10000000000); }, pageNum : Math.round(Math.random() * 10000000000), refresh : function(iframeId) { if (typeof(iframeId) != 'undefined') { var iframe = document.getElementById(iframeId); if (iframe) { iframe.name = iframeId; var oldSrc = iframe.src || iframe.getAttribute('data-src'); var newSrc = oldSrc.replace(/misc=[0-9]+/, 'misc=' + aa.random()); if (newSrc !== undefined) { var newFrame = iframe.cloneNode(true); newFrame.src = newSrc; iframe.parentNode.replaceChild(newFrame, iframe); } } } else { for (var i in this.iframes) this.refresh(this.iframes[i]); } } }; //no AJAX refresh for inline ads aa.adServer = 'http://media2.legacy.com/'; aa.target = ''+ '/3.0'+ '/5306.1'+ '/1400071'+ '/0'+ '/-1/size=30x1'+ '/adtech;'+ 'alias=legacy.thestar.lifestory.30x1.1.1;'+ 'target=_blank;'+ 'key=' + escape('CCSONTARIO') + ';'+ 'kvopenextapp=' + escape('1') +';'+ 'kvcobrand=' + escape('thestar') +';'+ 'kvpersonid=' + escape('171562994') +';'+ 'sub1=' + escape('Canadian Cancer Society') + ';'+ 'sub2=' + escape('https://secure2.convio.net/cco/site/SPageServer?pagename=on_donationapi_direct&donform=permem&s_src=Legacy.com&s_subsrc=CLIO&utm_source=Legacy.com&utm_content=CLIO&utm_campaign=DONATIONS_ON') + ';'; if (typeof aa !== 'undefined' && typeof aa.kvscreenwidth !== 'undefined') aa.target += 'kvscreenwidth=' + escape(aa.kvscreenwidth()) + ';'; if (typeof aa !== 'undefined' && typeof aa.criteo !== 'undefined') aa.target += aa.criteo; aa.src = aa.adServer + 'addyn' + aa.target + 'grp=' + aa.pageNum +';misc=' + aa.random(); document.write("<div data-src='" + aa.src + "\' id='5f719330f9944e0f8f603c6e14cf7bc6' class='scriptHolder' style='display:inline;'><\/div>"); Canadian Cancer Society .
