WOLFEBORO -- Ethel Belle Green Clarke, 87, of Anagance Lane, and Hilton Head, S.C., died Aug. 19, 2009, at home in Wolfeboro. She was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Booneville, Ark., daughter of James William and Genevera Bell Benefield Green. She grew up in rural Oklahoma and later in Keota, Okla., graduating first in her class. She was recruited by the FBI and in 1942 went to work in Washington D.C. After World War II, she attended American University on a work/scholarship program, attaining the position of assistant bursar and assistant business manager. It was there that she met her future husband, John M. Clarke. She attended Calvary Methodist Church in Washington D.C., where she was married May 24, 1947. She continued to take courses at American University, the USDA Graduate School, and Strayers Business College. She was captain of her high school basketball team, played on the FBI team, and her church team. She was a competitive golfer and an avid bridge player. She loved gardening, flower arranging and kept score for the PGA for more than 25 years. She described her life as never a dull moment and never mediocre in her love of family and zest for life. The family includes two children, Charles Everette Clarke and Renee Claudeane Clarke Worth, both adopted; four granddaughters; and nieces, nephews and friends. She also raised a niece, Ruby McCaslin. SERVICES: The funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cate Park in Wolfeboro. Additional funeral services will be in Hilton Head at a later date. The Baker-Gagne Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wolfeboro is handling arrangements.
