Obituary of Esther-M. -Esther-M. -Williams Williams

WILLIAMS, Esther M. Esther M. Williams, age 84 of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away March 21, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill A. Williams. She is survived by her son James M. Williams of Knoxville, Tennessee and daughter Susan W. Duralde of Atlanta, Georgia, and grandchildren Matthew B. Williams of Tucson, Arizona, and in Atlanta: Scott A. Williams, Guillermo A. Duralde, Pilar L. Duralde, Tomas I. Duralde. She was a native of Iowa and graduate of Iowa State University. While there she held various leadership positions and was honored with membership into Mortar Board National College Senior Society. As a post-graduate, she attended management classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, she started the Kappa Delta chapter and met her husband. Settling in North Carolina, she raised a family. After moving to Atlanta in 1967, she earned a Masters Degree in Math at Emory University and an additional graduate degree at Georgia State University. She began her teaching career at Lithonia High School. When it opened, she moved to Peachtree High School where she became Chairman of the math department and was named a Star Teacher. She completed her career as math department Chairman at Dunwoody High School. Throughout her life, she was an exceptional servant leader for various organizations including P.E.O., Kappa Delta, Mortar Board, and the National Panhellenic Conference. After retiring, she recorded math text books for the blind, tutored math students at Georgia State, shelved books at the Buckhead branch of the Atlanta Public Library, staffed voting booths on election day, and, with her husband, she managed crowds at BellSouth sponsored golf tournaments. She was particularly tickled to have the opportunity to volunteer during the Atlanta Summer Olympics of 1996 in the synchronized swimming venue. Ironically, bearing the name of a famous swimming/Hollywood legend, she hated to swim. In addition, she was an avid gardener, puzzle-worker and Braves fan. She was a beloved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She will be missed. The family will receive friends Monday, March 24th from 6:00 til 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held, Tuesday March 25th 1:00 pm at Patterson Spring Hill Chapel. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
