ERVING - Ernest S. Lucas, 87, a resident of 5 Warner St., died Sunday evening, April 6, 2014, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Greenfield, MA, following a period of declining health, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Greenfield, MA, he was born on July 18, 1926 to Albin and Amelia (Giknis) Lucas and was educated in Greenfield Public Schools, graduate of the Class of 1944 at GHS.He enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 18, 1945, serving with the 43rd Air Depot and received the WW II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 27, 1946. Upon his return to civilian life, he worked for the Esleeck Paper Company, as well as for Erving Paper Company and retired in 1988.Ernest enjoyed as leisure time activities which included fresh and salt water fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening, photography, hand carving duck decoys and was a dog lover. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Annabelle P. (Paradis) Lucas, as well as by his daughter, Bernadette S. Lucas and her husband, Bruce Georgian of Amesbury, MA He is also survived by his sister, Amelia ""Millie"" Markol and her husband Joe of Montague Center, MA; two grandsons: Luke Georgian and his wife, Isabelle and their children, Riely and Reese, of Niantic, CT, and Mark Georgian and his wife, Chandon and their son Conrad of Amesbury, MA. Additionally, there are several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews, who will remember him with great affection. He was predeceased by his siblings: Alfred, Joseph, John and Helen Kuzmeskus. A memorial service will be conducted on April 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the McCarthy Funeral Home, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, with the Rev. Corey Sanderson, pastor of the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield, MA, to officiate. The Lucas family will receive guests from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Military honors will be observed, with a detachment of the 54th Massachusetts Army Patriot Honor Guard in attendance, assisted by Hale-Clapp VFW Post of South Deerfield, MA, providing a firing detail. Inurnment following cremation, will be private and at the convenience of the family.Expressions of affection in the form of charitable contributions are suggested in lieu of flowers to the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, P.O.
