KEAYS (Ellen) Jean (nee Wheeler) February 23, 1916 - October 5, 2009 Jean passed away peacefully in Peace Arch Hospital. She had been living in Crescent Gardens Nursing Home. Predeceased by husband Edgar (Bun) Keays, and brothers Ted and Bill Wheeler. Jean will be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, relatives and many dear friends. Jean graduated from nursing in 1941 and feeling a call to duty she enlisted with the South Africa Military Nursing Service where she served in several locations until 1944. Upon her return she nursed in Vancouver, before her long career with Boundary Health Unit. In 1948 Jean and Bun were married. Jean's commitment to Public Health helped establish or influence many existing programs. She was instrumental in starting Meals-on-Wheels and was a founder of B.C.Cancer Society, Surrey Branch. Jean served on the Boards of Surrey Memorial Hospital, VON Surrey and the BC Safety Council. Jean's dedication continued long after her retirement in 1980. She involved herself in numerous types of volunteer work in the field of health. She was always there for anyone who needed care, be it family, friend or stranger. A Celebration of Life will be held at Valley View Funeral Home 14660 - 72nd Ave., Surrey, BC. Monday, October 26th, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers please consider the charity of your choice.
