->BANGOR and RICHLAND, Wash. - Ellen Hughes Goodwin, 87, died peacefully Aug. 17, 2013, in Richland, Wash. Ellen was born May 29, 1926, in Bangor, to Isabelle (Lewis) Hughes and Carleton Hughes, one of the founders of Hughes Brothers Construction in Bangor.Ellen married her Bangor High School sweetheart, Harlan Goodwin, in 1944 prior to his deployment with the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet during World War II. She worked in Washington, D.C., as a secretary to an admiral while Harlan served on the U.S.S Phoenix in the Pacific. They were married for 61 years, until Harlan's death in 2005.She is survived by her three sons, Carleton and his wife, Denise, of Shaftsbury, Vt., John and his wife, April, of Cudahay, Calif., and Mark and his wife, Val, of Richland, Wash., and Blacksburg, Va.; two grandsons, Adam Goodwin, who lives with his wife, Alwyn, in Pasadena, Calif., and Jack Goodwin who attends the University of California at San Diego; a granddaughter, Ashley Goodwin Shadrin, who lives with her husband, Ryan, in Stratham, N.H.; and two great-grandchildren, Adlai Goodwin and Mae Shadrin of Pasadena, Calif., and Stratham, N.H., respectively. She was predeceased by her sister, Janet Peters; and brother, Murtaugh "Sonny" Hughes.Ellen and Harlan lived in seven different states during their married lives including, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida. She enjoyed entertaining and made many friends wherever she lived. Her childhood friend, Betty Adams of Lamoille; her cousins, Edward and Barbara Hughes of Bangor, and Bill and Connie Hughes of Brewer; her aunt, Clara Aird of Danville, Calif.; and aunt, Priscilla Campbell of Wiscasset, were among the dearest to her. She was a devoted wife and mother and an active volunteer for many charities and social causes throughout her life. She and Harlan spent winters at Golden Ponds in Ft. Pierce, Fla., after they retired and summered at the family camp on Harriman Pond in Maine where they frequently entertained family and friends who will miss her greatly.In recent years Ellen suffered from Alzheimer's and could not keep up her correspondence. Her final days were spent at Wynwood of Columbia in Richland, Wash. Her family wishes to thank the staff at Wynwood and Lower Valley Hospice for the extraordinary care and attention they gave her and for recognizing the exceptional person she was.A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor, where a gathering for sharing and refreshment will follow at the Pine Grove Remembrance Center, 1347 Hammond St., Bangor, ME 04401.
