Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Collier-Butler Chapel for Ella Mae Smith, 91, Gadsden, who passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, after an extended illness. Pastor Phillip Don Battles will officiate with burial at Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services will direct.Mrs. Smith was born and raised in Steele and moved to Gadsden where she owned and operated several businesses until her retirement. She was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of Rainbow City Methodist Church, L.A. Waites Sunday School Class and an honorary member of United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Will and Ozella Hammond; husband, Sam C. Smith; and best friend, Charles Nale.Survivors include her brother, John (Opal) Hammond; niece, Patricia (Jerry) Brown; nephew, Kenneth (Joyce) Stephens; and the special girls who provided her with love and care for the last four years, Jeanette Carter, Gail Sims and Dawn Brown.Pallbearers will be nephews, Mike, John, Scott, Jeremy, Jeff, Joseph Crowder and Jerry Brown.The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
