Obituary of Elizabeth Wilson


GRAFTON -- Elizabeth Cabell Wilson, a lifelong resident of Grafton, died peacefully at Heins Home in Townshend on Sept. 20, 2005. The widow of Grafton L. (Lee) Wilson, Jr., she was 85.As a young child, she spent summers at the Cabell family home in Houghtonville, outside Grafton, and made her permanent home there as a teenager while she attended Bellows Falls High School, although she completed her secondary education at Passaic Collegiate School in New Jersey.During World War II, she served as a second lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps as part of a mobile surgical unit. She saw duty in the South Pacific, Okinawa and Korea.She returned to Grafton after the war and worked as a nurse at Springfield Hospital until she married and raised a family. Mrs. Wilson was a life-long supporter of many environmental and social causes, and on the personal front, was an avid classical guitarist and horsewoman. She, her husband, and her children had lived in the Cabell homestead in Houghtonville for nearly 50 years. Due to their woodland preservation efforts, the property was named an Outstanding Tree Farm in Windham County.She is survived by her son, Jim, of Grafton; daughter Anna Hassid of Moraga, Calif.; son Bob of Santa Monica, Calif.; granddaughter Tirtzah Wilson of Astoria, N.Y.; as well as sister Alice Hadley of Rockingham and brother Walter Cabell of Rutland; nieces and nephews Mary Perry of Springfield; Sandra Cabell of Rutland; Larry Cabell of Craftsbury; Rick Cabell of Huntington; Nadya Hollstein of Santa Barbara; Monica Hollstein of Heidelberg, Germany; and grandnieces, grandnephews and in-laws. She was predeceased by sisters Mildred Blood of Bellows Falls and Marion Hollstein of Grafton and Lynchburg, Va.The family requests that any donations be made to Grafton Cares, P.O.
