STEWART, Elizabeth Arnett ReidJune 24, 1913 – December 11, 2012It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Stewart (nee Smyth), who died of old age in her 100th year. Born in Coatbridge, Scotland, Betty moved to Canada in 1925 with her grandparents, with whom she had gone to live following the death of her mother when she was just seven years of age. She married Gordon Campbell Stewart in 1938. Gordon passed away suddenly in 1954 at age 42, leaving her to raise their five children, who then ranged in age from nine months to 13 years. She was a lifelong and active member of Fairview Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir into her 90s. Betty was famous for her cooking, in particular her fabulous buttermilk scones, and her knitting, especially the more than 100 afghans she produced in her later years that are still keeping people cozy around the world. She is survived by her children, Charlotte (Vern), Mary, Kenneth (Rachima), Catherine (Keith) and Gordon (Christy), eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She will be missed by many friends and relatives in Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, New Zealand and Australia. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 17, 11 a.m., at Fairview Presbyterian Church, 2725 Fir St. (at 11th Avenue), Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name to Canuck Place would be appreciated.
