LARGO, Fla. — Elizabeth (Carswell Townsend) Dezell Murray, 97, passed away July 5, 2010, with family by her side in the care of Suncoast Hospice at Sweetwater Assisted Living Facility of Largo.Betty was born March 26, 1913, in Lynn, Mass., to Josephine and Arthur Carswell Townsend, graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1930 and attended Burdett College.After the death of her husband, James Menzo Dezell in 1945, she purchased and was the proprietor of Betty's Variety Store on Walnut Street, Lynn, for many years. She married Chester F. Murray Sr. in 1958, retired to Alton, N.H. in 1965 and was active in the Foster Grandparent program for 10 years for the Alton School system.In 1998, she moved to Largo, Fla., where she enjoyed knitting hats for cancer victims, sewing, and playing bingo at Sugar Creek MHP.She is survived by daughters, Marcia Gilbert-O'Hanlon and Virginia Soucy-Beck (Wayne) of Sedona Ariz.; stepson, Harold Murray; daughters-in-law, Mary Murray and Louise Murray; grandchildren, Ritchie Conary (Cindy), Robert Soucy, J. Michael Soucy, Denise Loop (John), Sharon Lewis (David); six stepgrandchildren; great-grandchildren and many family and friends in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Florida.She was predeceased by husbands, James Dezell and Chester Murray Sr.; sister, Virginia Townsend Dodge; stepson, Chester F.
