Obituary of Elizabeth Garvey

Sister Elizabeth Garvey died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Visitation will be at St. Ann Church, 311 Carr Ave., Keansburg, N.J., on Thursday, Aug. 30, from 2 to 7 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment, under the direction of the Laurel Funeral Home, 201 Laurel Ave., West Keansburg, N.J., will be held Friday at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cutchogue, Long Island, N.Y. Sister Elizabeth (the former Sister Mary Andre) is survived by her sister, Alice Gallivan (spouse George) of Texas; her brother, Charles (wife Eileen) of Florida, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their children. A graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School, Sr. Elizabeth earned her M.A. in education at Georgian Court University, Lakewood, N.J. Entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1950, Sister Elizabeth welcomed the opportunity to serve God's people first in the ministry of education as teacher and principal. For 28 years, she served as teacher or principal in the New Jersey dioceses of Camden, Metuchen and Trenton, as well as in Portland, Maine. Perhaps her greatest joy came in the last 31 years working with senior citizens as the director of the Bayshore Senior Day Center, Keansburg, N.J., and living with her sisters in Mercy at Saint Ann's Convent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 U.S. Hwy 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069, and/or to the Bayshore Senior Day Center, 100 Main St., Keansburg, N.J. 07734.
