COOK Elizabeth Baker Cook, 80, of Fernandina Beach passed away Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Nassau Baptist Medical Center. She was fondly known as Bebe. Bebe was born on April 19, 1934 in Macon, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Baker. Bebe graduated from Gainesville High School in 1952. She attended Auburn University for two years and later completed a degree in Elementary Education at Mercer University in Macon. She received subsequent degrees from the University of Georgia. Teaching was her passion. After teaching first, second and third grade for a number of years, Bebe served as an Elementary Curriculum Director with the Bibb County School System. She continued in that position until retirement in 1993. After retirement, Bebe continued to be involved in education. She taught classes for the school system, served as an educational consultant, presented workshops throughout Georgia and launched a new career as a professional storyteller. In addition, she served as an adjunct professor at Wesleyan College, Georgia College and State University and Mercer University. Bebe was an active member of both Vineville United Methodist Church in Macon and Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach. While a member at Vineville, she taught children, youth and adult Sunday School classes. She served as a volunteer staff member at Junior Camp for fifteen years. Bebe was a trained leader of Disciple Bible Studies. She served on numerous committees and was president of United Methodist Women. Upon transferring her membership to Memorial United Methodist Church, Bebe immediately became an active member. She utilized her storytelling skills at Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Edna Ward Sunday School Class, and a trained Stephen Minister. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women. Bebe was best known for her sense of humor. She loved to tell stories and most always added her own special twist to those stories. She had the ability to laugh at herself and to help others laugh, too. Bebe could supply a joke or a funny saying for almost every situation. She loved costumes and was known to lighten up a serious meeting by appearing in an outlandish mask or costume. People were always happier for having been in her presence. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dal and Scott Baker. She leaves behind her daughter, Lisa Ballew, and her husband, Mark, her son, Bill Cook, and his wife, Jeanne, and her son Rick Cook. She also has six grandchildren, Baker and Betsy Ballew, and Macon, William, Walker and Emme Cook. She has numerous friends who will miss her dearly. Services will be held in the sanctuary at Memorial United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 12 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception at Maxwell Hall. Pastor Beth Fogle-Miller will officiate. An additional service will be held in the sanctuary at Vineville United Methodist Church in Macon on Monday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Rick Lanford will officiate. Bebe will be laid to rest in a private family service.
