Elizabeth Andrews Lee - FLAT ROCK, NC - Elizabeth Andrews Lee, 84, died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. Born May 24, 1926 in Flat Rock, she was the daughter of the late Alice Lowndes and William Parker Andrews. She was also predeceased by her husband Dr. Lawrence Lee, Jr. and her son, Lawrence Elliot Lee. Betty graduated from the Fassafern School in 1943 and Agnes Scott College in 1947. She married Dr. Lawrence Lee, Jr. of Savannah, GA August 27, 1949 and made her home there for over 40 years where she was involved in many community, civic and church activities. She served as the first woman president of United Way of Savannah in 1969, served as president of the Junior League of Savannah, the Trustees Garden Club and Historic Savannah Foundation. Betty was one of the early founders of driving tours of downtown Savannah and co-founder of Tours on Tape. In 1973 she received Historic Savannah Foundation's Davenport Trophy. Under her leadership the Foundation raised the necessary funds to restore the Scarborough House. In 2000 she received Historic Flat Rock Foundation's Volunteer of the Year Award for her longstanding leadership of the annual Tour of Homes. She also served on the boards of Historic Flat Rock, Inc., the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the St. Catherine's Island Foundation, Inc., the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Porter Aid Society and The Nature Conservancy in Georgia. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Descendents of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Betty worked for David Byck Realty in the 1980's and was a successful realtor in Savannah and the South Carolina Lowcountry. A talented flower arranger, she served on the Flower Guilds of St John in the Wilderness Church in Flat Rock, NC, Christ Episcopal Church in Savannah, GA, and the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, SC. Betty also delivered meals for Meals on Wheels in Bluffton, Savannah and Hendersonville and was an Interfaith Assistance Ministry volunteer. As a great sportswoman she excelled at tennis, horseback riding, swimming and bird hunting. Betty loved entertaining and had friends of all ages. She is survived by her daughter, Alice Lee Fraser and her husband, Joseph Bacon Fraser III; her son Robert Mackay Lee and his wife, Dyane Cave, all of Bluffton, SC; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Fraser Laffitte, wife of Henry Spann Laffitte, Jr. of Columbia, SC, Clermont Lee Fraser of Raleigh, NC, Joseph Bacon Fraser IV and his wife, Laura Henderson Fraser, of Atlanta, GA, Lawrence Mackay Lee of Savannah, GA, Hunter Elliott Lee of Charleston, SC; two great-granddaughters, Alice Lowndes Laffitte and Lucille Morrison Laffitte of Columbia, SC; her beloved brother, William Parker Andrews, Jr. and his wife, Martha Scott Andrews, of Flat Rock; her sister-in-law Jeanne Rooney Lee of Bluffton, SC; and seven nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at 3:00PM on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at St. John in the Wilderness with Rev. John Morton officiating.
