Elizabeth-A. McCaffrey, born in 1913, spouse of Francis-B. McCaffrey, mother of Francis, died on December 24, 2007. Please consult the obituary here:
McCaffrey, Elizabeth A. ALBANY Elizabeth A. McCaffrey died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Christmas Eve, December 24, 2007. She was born in Gzeisazz, Germany (presently part of Poland) on September 19, 1913. She immigrated to New York City just after the Great Depression and worked various household jobs until she completed high school and received a degree in cosmetology. She married Francis B. McCaffrey on Valentine's Day 1942 and her only child, Francis Patrick, was born that same year. Since Francis B. was drafted into the Army shortly after they were married, she solely bore the responsibility of carrying a child and raising him until Francis B. returned, when the war ended. Elizabeth worked in a Fifth Ave. beauty parlor while living in the Bronx until she retired and moved with her husband to Albany to join their son. They settled in Delmar in 1980 and she also worked as a beautician in Albany until she finally retired. She then spent much peaceful time working in her orchard which she loved since it reminded her of her youth on a farm in Germany. Some time after her husband died in 2002, she moved into the McAuley Residence which provided for her physical and spiritual needs very comfortably. She will always be remembered by all who came to know her as a deeply religious, modest and totally unselfish person. She had a clever sense of humor which belied her quiet persona. She was an active communicant at St. Thomas the Apostle. Elizabeth is survived by her son, Francis P., his wife Nancy; her grandson, Nathan and his wife Miriam; her sister, Gertrud Sandman and her husband Fritz (both living in Germany); and many nieces and nephews living here and in Germany. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2007 at Convent of Mercy Chapel, 634 New Scotland Ave., Albany. There will be no calling hours. Contributions can be made in her name to Eternal Word Television Network, 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, AL 35210-9948 or Community Hospice of Albany, 443 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
