SMITH, Eleanor Jean (nee Nevin) March 25, 1922 to May 14, 2010 Eleanor Jean Smith withdrew from cancer and quietly slipped away, her daughter Ginny and son-in-law Alexander Mackay by her side. Eleanor was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jimmy, (CHUM Radio/CFRA) and her daughter Carolyn (known by many as "Honey"). She leaves her sisters Doris Sherer of Montreal and Margaret Taylor Nevin of Toronto and nephews and nieces, for whom she was Nonnie. A job with General Motors took the family to Frankston, Australia, where they learned to enjoy Christmas on the beach; eventually they settled in Ottawa and found the house of their dreams on the river. When she was widowed at age 55, Eleanor took on volunteer work at The Cancer Clinic, The May Court (working the Bargain Box), The Blood Donor's Clinic, and The Institute for the Blind. She played golf (and became the Rules Maven for the Niners) and Bridge, although she claimed she wasn't great at either but enjoyed herself. In the last month, her blue eyes danced as she told all who would listen that she had played golf till she was 85 and had led a wonderful life and was ready to tackle The Next Adventure.... Special thanks to the bright, caring, delightful Palliative Care team at the Civic who coached us to the finish line; Dr. Farncombe and especially Max; to Edie (adored "adopted" daughter), who provided a refuge for Ginny these last few months and who rushed out several nights to be with El on yet another trip to the hospital; to Cathie, who showed such strength in those last hours; and to all who sent emails of encouragement and support. As Eleanor wished, there will be no funeral, just a gathering to celebrate her life. A heartfelt 'thank you' to all the golfers who joined us to bid El Good-bye on Sunday.
