ELEANOR MARY LAMPI Eleanor Mary Lampi passed peacefully on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005 at her home in the Atikokan Extended Care. Eleanor, the second child and eldest daughter of Milton and Anna (nee Monson) Bragg, was born in Anaheim, Sask. on Aug. 17, 1911. She was five days shy of her 94th birthday when she died, and had been healthy, active, and interested in the world around her almost to the end. Eleanor was born on a farm in Anaheim. When she was six years old, the family moved to Mara, Mn., where her parents had married and where her mother’s family was still residing. Over the next five or six years, Eleanor’s family moved about from one small town to another in northern Minnesota until in 1923 they moved one last time, setting up residence in Finland, Ont. Eleanor attended school and developed many lifelong friendships in Finland. She married Willow (William) Lampi on Sept. 21, 1931 in the Roman Catholic Rectory in Barwick, Ont. They homesteaded and raised four sons near both her parents and Willow’s in Finland. In 1953, the family relocated to Atikokan, Ont., where, over the years, Eleanor worked as a cook at Steep Rock Iron Mines, the CNR, Quetico Centre, and the Atikokan Gold Mines in Sapawe. She also co-owned and operated the Roadside Lodge tourist camp at Niobe Corner for a few years in the early 1960s. Eleanor was born with a green thumb, on both hands, and spent many hours in her gardens. She also loved fishing and hunting, and spent much of her time out of doors. Above her career and hobbies, Eleanor’s strongest interest was always her family and friends. Her dedication displayed a depth of love and devotion which all about her felt deeply. Eleanor leaves to mourn her three sons, Milton and Richard (Jean) of Atikokan, Ont., and Fredrick of Merritt, B.C.; 13 grandchildren, Tina (Ken) Wilson in Alberta, Nicholas and Mark (Darlene) Durling in Nova Scotia, Sandra (Tom) Morden and Christine (Wade) Modeland in Atikokan, Cecil Lampi, Kelly (Sharon) Lampi in Fort Frances, Shawna (Ian) Lampi-Legaree in Yellowknife, N.W.T., Douglas (Lisa) Lampi in Atikokan, Jill (Daniel Little) Lampi in Winnipeg, Troy (Glenda) and Trevor Lampi of Merritt, B.C., and Tanya (Wayne) Hepper of Burnaby B.C.; 25 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She also was survived by her brothers, Carl and David (Ilene) Bragg in Finland, Ont.; sister, Anna Jondreau in Thunder Bay, Ont.; plus many special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, William Lampi on Dec. 11, 1972; sons, infant William in 1932 and Nicholas on May 29, 1993; and grandsons, Ted Robert in 1971, William in 1990, and Travis in 2004. She also was predeceased by her parents, Anna Munson Bragg in 1947 and Milton L. Bragg in 1949; brothers, Raymond, Leo, Joseph, and Frank Bragg; sisters, Ruth Anderson and Lillian Galinger; and daughter-in-law, Carolyne, on May 19, 2005. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Legion in Atikokan, with interment in the Finland Cemetery in Finland, Ont. at a later date. Honourary pallbearers were Sandra Morden, Christine Modeland, and Douglas and Jill Lampi. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Extended Care Wing of the Atikokan General Hospital.
