After the war the couple lived in Nanjing, China, where Elaine worked to develop the original Fulbright International Exchange Program. They returned to Washington in 1949. Throughout her professional life, Elaine had administrative responsibilities for the Fulbright program and later held an acting directorship of the International Exchange of Scholars, until her retirement in 1981. Thereafter the couple moved to Craftsbury, VT, where they were involved with the Craftsbury Chamber Players and St. Johns Episcopal Church. In 2003 they moved to Kendal at Hanover. Elaine is survived by George and two goddaughters.
