Funeral services for CPT Effie Frances Smith, U.S. Army (Ret.), 88, will be at 11 a.m. today, October 29, 2010, at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Bobby Kirk officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to services. Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at her home. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Law Kirk (David), of Piedmont; a son, Benny E. Smith, of Jackson, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Jackie Law, of Piedmont; a grandson, Brad Law, of Auburn; one niece and two nephews; caregivers, Deborah Clausen, Mona Steed and Jennie Hardin. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Long, Johnny Long, David Kirk, Robert Earl Acker, Jerry Cook and Bob Farmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Ernest Sides, Billy Westbrook, Bobby Porter, Fred Rhinehart, Billy Pike and the Liberty Baptist Church Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Smith was born in Piedmont and was a graduate of Piedmont High School and the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital School of Nursing. She proudly served as a registered nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She was a graduate of the Army Nurse Corps Training School at Fort Rucker, Alabama and holds a certificate in "Psychiatry in Nursing" from U.A.B. School of Nursing in Birmingham. She served as charge nurse on the U.S. Hospital Ship, "Shamrock" which transported the wounded from foreign soil back to America. Later she served on a U.S. Troop train from Los Angeles, California to Fort Hamilton, New York. In Texas she attended a reception honoring General Jonathan Wainwright's return to the United States after the fall of Battan and Corredigar. She holds several ribbons and was given the highest performance rating any Army Nurse could obtain. Her photo and write-up may be seen in Washington, D.C. listed as "Women In Military Service". She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Smith; her parents, Neal and Lola Williams; two sisters, Ruth Walther and Jean Williams; and two infant brothers. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Baptist Church.
