Major Edward Stewart, 85, of 306 Alfred Road, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Easley. Born in Easley, Mr. Stewart was a son of the late Robert and Nervleann Stansell Stewart. He retired from the City of Easley as Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation. He was a former member of Easley Lions Club, past President of the Civitan Club, a member of Bates Lodge No. 189 A.F.M., a member of the Pickens Chapter and Council, Easley Commandery and Hejaz Temple and the American Legion Post 52. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to camp with the Foothills Sams Camping Club. Mr. Stewart was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a gunner on LCI 663 in the South Pacific. Mr. Stewart was a 52-year member of First Baptist Church in Easley, where he taught Sunday School for over 40 years, and was honored as Deacon Emeritus. He was also a member of the Coley Cleveland Sunday School Class and the Friendship Club. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lucile Cisson Stewart, of the home; a son, James E. "Jim" Stewart and his wife Jean, of Easley; one daughter, Judy Stewart Cox and her husband David, of Easley; four grandchildren, Jeanna and Jayme Stewart, David K. Cox Jr. and Kelly C. Turner; and four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Turner and Maddisen and Morgan Cox. He was predeceased by four brothers, Walter, Ralph, Grover and Earl Stewart; and six sisters, Flora Stewart, Mattie Corley, Maude Edens, Edna Mullinax, Ellie Mace and Lena Burke. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. John M. Adams and the Rev. David Turner. The committal service, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lloyd E. Batson, will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Escort of Honor will be the Coley Cleveland Sunday School Class and the R.C. McCall Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the funeral, in the church narthex. The body is at Robinson Funeral Home, and the family is at the home. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 300 E. First Ave., Easley, SC 29640.
