ELIOT, Maine — Edward Patrick Moriarty, 77, of 7 Staysail Way, Portsmouth, N.H., passed away in the early morning of Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at his family's home in Eliot, Maine. He was born March 11, 1934, in Arlington, Mass., to Martin and Patricia Moriarty, recent immigrants of County Kerry, Ireland. He attended Arlington Public School, the Perkins Institute, Harvard, and Boston University, where he concentrated on his love of history and passion for teaching. He was married in July 1962, to his late wife, Joanne, a loving and model of commitment of nearly 40 years. Together they ventured overseas, where Edward taught with the U.S. embassy schools in Pakistan, Singapore, and India and traveled extensively with their young boys throughout Southeast Asia. In 1973, the two adventurers settled in Maine to begin their next adventure of learning the challenges and rewards of organic farming through trial, sweat, determination and the sometimes eager help of three young boys. For close to 20 years Edward was an educator of intellect in History and World Civilization at Marshwood High School, an educator of the physical and strategy as the coach and founder of the wrestling program at Marshwood, a protector of workers rights as a member of the teachers union, a protector of town and farm as a member of the Planning Board, and a lifelong educator in humanity, civilization, and moral character locally and around the world. Edward served as a member of the Baron Place Retirement Community Board of Directors, working to provide quality affordable housing for all.He traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South, Central, and North America, participating in home building projects within this country, as well as Guatemala and Northern Ireland. Edward was a champion for those whose voice he felt was not being heard. He is survived by his three sons, Mark and his wife, Kathi, of Eliot, Myles of Dover, N.H., and Kevin of Cambridge, Mass. He leaves behind his brother, Rick and wife, Karen Moriarty of Plymouth, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Dottie Moriarty of Danvers, Mass., and Lorraine Moriarty of Chapel Hill, N.C. He is survived by his grandchildren, Anthony, Jannell, and Sean Moriarty, all of whom he loved dearly and whose individual accomplishments in life, character, and exploration were an endless source of pride and peace to him. Edward was passionate until the end about learning, and moreover with the sharing of his experiences with whomever would listen, as well as with those who wouldn't. He believed an educated society was the path to a compassionate, peaceful, and united world.A celebration of his amazing life will be held April 29 at Spring Hill, in South Berwick, Maine from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friends, family, and fans are welcome.
