Obituary of Edward McConnell

McCONNELL, Edward (Ted)Passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2015, in Toronto. He was surrounded by his loving family. He had suffered from Lewy Body and Parkinsons for a number of years. Ted will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Pauline and his children, Eamonn (Charlotte), Eileen Farrow (Tye), Stephen (Lindsay), Michael (Leslie) and David (Marisa) and grandchildren, Emily, Celia, Megan, Conor, Brendan, Caroline, Julia, Eamonn, Jordan, Niall, Aidan, Sloane, Finn and Willow. Ted moved to Canada from Belfast in 1957, "only for a year," and never left. Pauline also from Belfast moved to Montreal a year later, to join him, and they were married. Ted graduated from Queen''s University in Belfast with an LLB degree in 1955. He was an accomplished athlete as he captained two of the university''s varsity sports. In 1953, he captained the Queen''s Hurling team which won the Fitzgibbon Cup. He was also a distinguished debater and represented the university in that field. He received two Honorary Doctorate degrees from Queen''s University in Belfast and St. Mary''s University in Halifax. In Toronto, he became the President and CEO of the International Trust Company (Citibank) and then subsequently established his own investment counselling firm; EJ McConnell and Associates in 1976. The firm grew rapidly and became one of the largest independent investment counsellors in the country before being sold to Barclays Bank in 1995. Ted was also very involved with the Irish community in Canada. He was appointed in 1990 by the Government of Canada as the Canadian Observer for the International Fund for Ireland. In 1997, he was appointed First Honorary Consul General of Ireland in Canada. He was a Director of the Ireland Fund of Canada, was Irish Person of the Year in 1992, and was the Grand Marshall of the St Patrick''s Day Parade in Toronto. He was former Chairman of the Ireland Canada Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of Toronto Irish Arts. Ted was honoured by Queen Elizabeth in 1991 with the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He was a member of the RCYC and the Toronto Golf Club. His great sense of fun and adventure will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends. The family has held a private service. There will be a Celebration of Life in late September. Ted''s family would like to thank all the kind people at Kensington Gardens who looked after him so very well these past few years. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson Society Canada would be gratefully appreciated by the family. 1-800-565-3000x3301 or http:/ /donate.parkinson.ca/TedMcConnell
