Edward M. Lee, born in 1923, spouse of Patricia F. Lee, son of Bartley and Anna, father of Deborah, Ma, Cheryl, Virginia, Patricia, York, Cynthia, Pamela and Greg, died on March 2, 2012 at 89 years old.
Edward M. Lee SOUTHWICK - Edward M. Lee, 89, formerly of Westfield, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Somerville, MA, son of Bartley and Anna (Marrow) Lee. He graduated cum laude from Tufts University in 1947 and from Boston College Law School with a J.D. in 1950.He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He continued his military service with the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1977 as a Commander with a total of 35 years. His service to the community is extensive, including incorporating and serving as director and president of the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of Westfield, Inc., which since 1962 has given 2.4 million in scholarships to local residents. He also served as Vice-President and President of Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of Massachusetts and Director of Citizens' Scholarship of America (now known as Scholarship America). He was Chairman of the Board of Scholarship America from 1971-1979 and was instrumental in developing the corporate scholarship program which has distributed over a billion dollars in scholarships. He served as an Honor Roll Trustee after that time. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by the Rotary Club of Westfield for his service to the greater Westfield area including School Committee 1956-1960, Westfield City Solicitor 1960-1963, Chairman of the Special High School Building Committee 1968-1970, Town Counsel, Town of Russell 1959-1963, President of Westfield Chamber of Commerce, 8 year director and President of Westfield Area Mental Health and Retardation Board, Incorporator and Director for 10 years of Work Opportunity, Inc., Director for 12 years and President of Community Council, Greater Springfield, Inc., Member, Executive United Way of Pioneer Valley and Member Funds Advisory Committee of Springfield. He was in Rotary Club for over 25 years, serving as President from 1963-1964. He attended 4 Rotary International Conventions and was an emissary to Rotary Club of Pontypridd, Wales in 1964. On November 19, 1992, he was awarded the Massachusetts Bar Association "Customer Service Award." In addition to the above, he was acknowledged for 2 years as president of the Westfield Bar Association and one year service on the executive committee of the Hampden County Bar Association and for his service as president of the Westfield Area Child Guidance Clinic, Inc; incorporator and second president of the Greater Westfield Chamber of Commerce, director and first president of the Westfield Area Mental Health and Retardation Board and first president of the Consortium of Western Massachusetts Mental Health and Retardation Boards. He served for six years as a trustee of Noble Hospital. a trustee of Silvermill Realty Corporation and a trustee of the Investment Committee for Noble Health Systems, Inc. He was elected as the first President of the Noble VNA. Under his leadership the Noble VNA exceeded all projections. His services include his years as a Guard Knight and Advocate of Whip City Council #100, Senior Counselor of United Travelers #686, Commander and Judge Advocate of the American Legion Post #124.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Patricia F. Lee, 6 children, Deborah Gustafson of Plymouth, MA, Cheryl Rose of Springfield, Virginia, Patricia Lee of Mamaroneck, New York, Cynthia Andersen of Westfield, MA, Pamela Kania of Chicopee, MA, and Greg Lee, of Kingwood, Texas, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. from Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St. Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m.at St. Mary's Church, 35 Bartlett Street in Westfield. Burial with military honors will follow in St Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
