Sunrise August 9, 1920 - Sunset July 2, 2012Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, Wonza Davis; his four children, Bradley Davis and wife Connie, Carolyn Davis and husband Tim, Lisa Davis, and Richard Davis and wife Aurora; stepdaughter, Valerie Meyer and husband Jerry, and stepgrandson, Christopher Thompson. Other survivors include nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.Dr. Davis graduated from Murray State University in 1941. He was then employed by E.I. DuPont Co. as a physicist from 1941 to 1943. He then served in the U.S. Army for a short period, prior to being discharged to enter the University of Louisville Dental School, graduating in 1947. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1950.He was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force in September, 1952. His active duty included service in California, Alaska, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, Germany and Vietnam. Highlights of his Air Force career include being selected to attend a course in "Biomedical Research Methodology" at the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB, San Antonio, TX, and serving as the 7th Air Force Dental Surgeon at Tan Son Nhut, Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force as the Base Dental Surgeon at Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX in September, 1973.Following his retirement from the military, he served as an associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery with dual appointments to the medical and dental schools at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX from 1973 to 1985. Twice, he was selected by the senior class as the Outstanding Professor.Dr. Davis was a member of the American Dental Association, the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Retired Officers Association.He attended World Outreach Church and was a co-leader of the military bible study group.A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home.Visitation with the family will be held from 12 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Jennings & Ayers Funeral Home, 820 South Church St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130.
