Edward Carter, born in 1915, father of Gretchen, Adrienne, Hilary, Buzz, Cathy, Pad and Pete, died. Please consult the obituary here:
CARTER Edward Victor (Poor, Vic, Nick, Kit, E.V., Ed, Edward, Pops)Poor was born in Saskatoon on August 11, 1915. He died quietly at home, in his sleep on July 2, 2009 in Vancouver. Kit was married to Helen Frances Maynard on May 1, 1945 in England and had three daughters; Gretchen (Doug), Adrienne, and Hilary (Peter). After his loss of Helen in 1971, Poor married Florence Joan Denroche (J.D.) in June, 1972. J.D. brought her four children Pad (Ray), Pete (Barb), Buzz (Keryn) and Cathy (Paul) to join the family. Together they had 16 grandchildren and 11.75 great grandchildren. J.D. passed away in July of 2007. Nick became member of the R.C.M.P. in December 1937, joined the 11th Canadian Special Provost Section and fought in Italy, Germany and ultimately, as a Captain, was among the liberation armies who freed Holland in 1944. He proudly rode in a number of Musical Rides and was part of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation procession in 1953. He retired from the RCMP in 1963 and returned to his family home on Point Grey Road in 1964. This house, one of the first on Pt Grey Rd, was built by his parents in 1925. It was there he lived out his life - and he did liveÇ every minute of his life to the fullest. His second retirement was from the Federal Government where he worked as an Unemployment Insurance Investigator. He conducted tours through the St. Roch in Vancouver and was a docent at the Maritime Museum. Poor had a myriad of hobbies in which he immersed himself. Horseback riding, woodworking, travelling, keep fit classes, wine making, sketching, bird watching, gardening, gourmet cooking, and theme parties will name just a few. A testimony to his love of playing with the English language is indicated by the 6 or 7 versions of thesauruses he owned. He always said that `life is a gig.' We would like to thank his wonderful caregivers and friends: Joseph, Norma, Donna, Mari and Laurie. They cared for him with respect and dignity and they all mean the world to our family. A very special thank you goes to Sara, Fraser and Carter for their selfless devotion to their Grandpa. In preference to flowers, donations would be appreciated by the Alzheimer's Society of Canada. A celebration of Poor's life will be held at his home on July 25th at 4:00 p.m. "The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Not all your Tears wash out a Word of it."
