Edna Gertrude Quinby Morgan was born Oct. 22, 1913 in Charleston, S.C., to the late Bertrand A. and Lillie E. (Burn) Quinby. She passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 at Effingham Care Center at the age of 101.She graduated from Julian Mitchell School and Memminger High School before attending college. In 1935, she received an A.B. degree from the College of Charleston with majors in Latin and mathematics. In 1939, she received a M.A. degree from George Peabody College for Teachers with a major in education and minors in psychology and history. She then took graduate courses at Georgia Southern College.On July 14, 1940, Edna and Hollis Albert Morgan were married in Charleston at the Church of the Holy Communion, of which she was a member and former Sunday school teacher. Edna had been active in church, school and community affairs. She organized the Clyo Girl Scout troop after having been a First Class Scout and Scout leader for several years in Charleston. She served as a member of the Effingham County Library Board. During World War II, she served with other Clyo school teachers in registering people in the Clyo school district for gasoline and food ration stamps. In addition, she took some turns as a volunteer at Mallory's Store as an airplane spotter for the Aircraft Warning System. She served as a PTA officer, holding all offices except president.Before her marriage, Edna taught for one year in South Carolina, at Sullivan's Island. She taught for 31 years in the Effingham County School System – 18 years at Clyo Consolidated High School (later named Clyo Elementary School), two years at Effingham County Junior High School and 11 years at Effingham County High School, from which she retired in June 1975. During her career she taught on every level from the first grade through the 12th.She was a member of Wingard Memorial Lutheran Church, serving as a former teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school, and former treasurer and president of WELCA. She was a member of the Clyo Homemakers Club, for which she wrote a 30-year history. As an alumna of Peabody College, she joined the alumni association of Vanderbilt University when the two institutions merged. She also held life membership in the following organizations: College of Charleston Alumni Association, Georgia Salzburger Society (Associate), Historic Effingham Society, Effingham Retired Teachers Association and Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She was a contributor for the Georgia Retired Teachers Association bicentennial book and the History of Effingham County, Georgia. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Effingham County Hussars Chapter No. 2285. She was a recipient of the John Adam Treutlen Award given by Effingham Chamber of Commerce.Survivors include her children, Ryal (Sally) Morgan and Ashley (Norma Jean) Morgan, all of Clyo, and Sylvia M. Hendrix of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Stephen (Lindsay) Hendrix, Michael (Cindy) Morgan, Stanley (Jennifer) Morgan, Regina (Chris) Collins and Tony (Katy) Morgan; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Vivvian (Roy) Huthmacher; and a number of nieces and nephews.Visitation was Friday, Feb. 13 at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home.Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14 in the funeral home chapel.Interment followed in Ryall Cemetery in Clyo.Remembrances may be given to Ryall Cemetery Fund, c/o Ashley Morgan, 1935 Clyo-Kildare Rd., Clyo, GA 31303.
