EASTON and PRESQUE ISLE - Edna (Graham) Ames, 98, wife of the late W. Hayward Ames Sr., went home to be with her heavenly Father Tuesday morning, June 23, 2009, at Presque Isle Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for one week. She was born Aug. 1, 1910, in Easton, the daughter of Herbert and Ethel (Wilson) Graham. She was a graduate of Easton High School. She was married to W. Hayward Ames Sr., in 1929, was a member of Easton Pentecostal Church, and also attended Old Fashion Revival Center, Bridgewater, for several years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, relative and friend with a deep abiding faith in Jesus, and spent many hours serving Christ through her church. Edna was a wonderful cook and will be remembered for her love of entertaining at her home and cottage on East Grand Lake. She was active in the Cooperative Extension for a number of years and worked in food service at the University of Maine at Presque Isle after her husband's death. She was also a companion to Polly Parker in Katonah, N.Y., for 16 years. In addition to her parents, Edna was predeceased by her husband, W. Hayward Ames Sr.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arnold and Ruby Smith, John and Emma Graham; son-in-law, J. Robert Neely; and nephew, Clare Graham. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, W. Hayward Jr. and Deane Ames of Easton; one daughter, Marjorie Neely of Owego, N.Y.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Patricia and Daniel Innes of West Newberry, Mass., J. Robert and Kris Neely of Livermore, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Brendan and Trevor Innes of West Newberry, Mass., Mackenzie and Zachary Neely of Livermore, Calif. She was affectionately known as "Grammy," "Granny," to her grandchildren, and "Auntie Edna" to her nieces and nephews and their families, including the Rev. Harry and Muriel Fletcher of Cape Cod, Mass., Patricia and Robert Shaw of Presque Isle, Loree and Harley York of Mars Hill, Janice Graham of Presque Isle, Stephen and Marian Spence and Charles Spence, all of Texas. Edna is also survived several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and a number of close cousins who live in Woodstock and Perth-Andover, New Brunswick. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Monday, June 29, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where the funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Carter officiating. Interment will be held after the service at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held after the interment service at VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Edna to the charity or organization of one's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
