Edith M. (Cleveland) Allen, 73, passed away peacefully Jan. 22, 2013, surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of her family. Edie "Mema", with miraculous strength, had a long battle of declining health. A lifelong Quincy resident, she was the devoted wife of the late John R. Allen, who passed in 2009. Born in Cambridge and raised in Squantum, she was the daughter of the late Maynard and Loretta (Pinkowski) Cleveland. She was a 1957 graduate of North Quincy High School. She worked as a typesetter with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Massachusetts for many years, and also worked in the business office of the Quincy Visiting Nurse Assn. She is lovingly remembered as a hard-working provider that always made family her first priority. She was the loving mother of Jeff Allen and Jay Allen, both of Squantum, and Debra Allen and Suzan Martell, also of Quincy; dear sister of Joseph Cleveland of Weymouth; cherished grandmother of Laura Cronin and her husband Jeffrey of Hanson, Kimberly Allen of Quincy, Jessica Allen of Manchester, N.H., and Matthew Martell of Quincy; great-grandmother of Taylor and Samantha Cronin. Donations in her memory may be made to Boston Medical Center Lung Cancer Research, One Boston Medical Center Place, Boston, MA 02118. Funeral and burial arrangements are private and under the care and direction of Hamel, Wickens & Troupe, Quincy Center.
