EVELYN ABBIE ALLYN MCDONALD SOUTH BURLINGTON - Evelyn Abbie Allyn McDonald passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2010, in the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in East Charleston on Jan. 8, 1919, the youngest child of Abner Edwin Allyn and Annie McLaughlin Allyn. She was a descendant of Charleston's first white settler, Abner Allyn. She attended elementary school at Buck School in Charleston, a one-room schoolhouse, and Brighton High School in Island Pond, graduating in 1935 at age 16. She attended the University of Vermont in Burlington, and graduated in 1939 with a BA Degree in Education. Her first teaching job was in the Barre Town School District at Lower Graniteville. She was a teaching principal at that school, teaching grades 6-8. Students from her first teaching position stayed in contact her entire life. She then taught in the Newport City South and West buildings, continuing to serve as a teaching principal. On July 11, 1942, she married Donald Wilson McDonald at South Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury, and settled in Island Pond, where Donald was a conductor for the Grand Trunk Railroad, later renamed the Canadian National Railroad, for 38 years. She was a longtime resident of Island Pond, until retiring to Burlington in 1994. She had two children, a daughter, Marcia Ann, born in 1947; and a son, Allyn John, born in 1952. She returned to teaching at Brighton Elementary School, and concluded her teaching career at NCUJHS, retiring in 1977. Evelyn was an active member of community organizations, including the Island Pond Congregational Church, and the First Congregational Church of Burlington. She also served five years on the local school board in Island Pond. She was predeceased by her parents and husband; as well as sisters, Anna Jardus, Glenn Patterson and Doris Chamberlain; and a brother, Ernest Allyn. Survivors include a daughter, Marcia Ethier of N. Reading, Mass.; a son, Allyn McDonald of Swanton; two grandsons, Justin Ethier of Baltimore, Md. and Jason Ethier of Acton, Mass. A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Burlington on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Evelyn's memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Burlington, 38 So.
