SPRINGFIELD -- Esther Johnson, 98, died Friday morning, July 1, 2005, at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center.She was born Feb. 23, 1907, the daughter of Leslie Fletcher and Jennie Chapman, in Springfield. She lived in Vermont her whole life. She graduated from Chester High School in 1924 and from the University of Vermont in 1926. Mrs. Johnson used her education from UVM and taught in one-room schoolhouses in Jamaica and Reading. She also gave piano lessons and was a member of the Home Dem club in Chester and enjoyed gardening, being a homemaker and being with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.She was predeceased by her husband Olin in 1970 and her son, Fletcher Johnson, who died on June 21, 2005.She is survived by her daughters, Arlene Gintof of Springfield and Betty Rounds of Bellows Falls; her sons, Kenneth Johnson of Rochester, N.Y. and Donald Johnson of Hermon, Maine; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.Services for Mrs. Johnson will be held on Tuesday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester at 1 p.m. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, Vemont Affiliate, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, VT 05446, to First Baptist Church in Chester or to the Andover Community Church.ADAMS & KENNEY FUNERAL HOMES is assisting the family with the arrangements.u
