Ernest S. "Bill" Jr. Age 85, passed away peacefully in Elmira, NY, on December 8, 2004. Bill was born on October 4, 1919 in Waverly, NY, to his parents, Hazel and Ernest Walker. He grew up and attended schools in Waverly, Binghamton and Pittsfield MA, graduating from Waverly High School in 1937. Following high school, Bill attended Riverside Academy, in Gainesville, GA, and Cornell University, where he graduated in 1942 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. Bill met Doris Wright, from Elmira, NY, at the "Villagers' Ball" in Athens, PA, in 1938. They were married on July 17th, 1942 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Bill was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1942 through 1945, surveying throughout Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas. In 1945, Bill and Doris returned to Waverly to join his father in the Ford dealership at Walker Motor Sales. Bill eventually took ownership of Walker Motor Sales and ran it until he retired in 1978. Following his retirement from the automobile business, Bill and Doris worked together in real estate for several years. For many years, Bill served on the Boards of the Marine Midland Bank, Robert Packer Hospital, and the Waverly Presbyterian Church. He was a lifelong member of the Waverly Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Chemung Valley-Waverly Lodge F.&A.M. for over 55 years. In 1984, Bill and Doris really retired, spending winters in Sun City Center, FL, and summers at the family cottage on Keuka Lake. In 1999 Bill and Doris returned north, spending winters in Elmira and summers at their home on Keuka Lake. For 15 years following a stroke in 1989, Bill worked diligently, with the dedicated help of Doris and many wonderful caregivers, to maintain his health. Bill was a kind, gentle and hard-working husband, father, and friend and will be missed dearly. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris; three children, Diane Edwards (Bon) of Montour Falls, NY, Ernest S. "Ernie" Walker III (Connie) of Dryden, NY, and Bob Walker (Debbie Kraemer) of Thetford, VT; his sister, Eleanor Grant of Auburndale, FL; and three grandchildren, Ernest S. "Sam" Walker, IV of Chicago, IL, Amy Walker of Greenwich, CT, and Jonathan Walker Edwards of Montour Falls, NY. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 11, at noon at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 445 Waverly Street, Waverly; visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Private burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
