BRIDPORT - Ella E. Smith, 85, died July 3, 2009, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Facility, with Alzheimer's disease.She was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Granville, Vt., the daughter of Rob and Lottie (Chatterton) Ford, and attended local schools.She worked in the veneer mill in Hancock and at the Van Raalte factory in Middlebury before marrying Archie Smith in 1953. Mrs. Smith volunteered for the Women's Auxiliary and the Grange, and baked pies for West Addison Methodist Church. She enjoyed participating at Project Independence in Middlebury.Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Smith of San Francisco, Calif., and Valerie Smith-Hastings of Bridport; three grandsons, Caleb, Marshall and Jonas Hastings, who shared their home with her in Bridport; and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by two brothers, Ted Ford of Granville and Robert Ford of New Haven.The celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
