Obituary of Dr. Janice M. Jackson


JACKSON Dr. Janice M., 67, of New York City and formerly of Scituate, MA, passed away at her home on March 28, 2010. She was a lifelong educator who received her B.A. from Merrymount College, where she was elected a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from Fordham University. She was a former Associate Chair of the psychology department and Director of the undergraduate psychology programs at Pace University in New York City. She was a former member and vice-president of the Pace chapter of Sigma XI, the scientific research honor society as well as a faculty advisor for the Pace chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society in Psychology. Upon retirement she was conferred as a Professor Emerita. She had numerous achievements during her career and at one time worked with NASA studying the effect of eye strain on the astronauts. She was appointed Division Vice-Captain for the 5th Division of the 1st District (Southern) of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in New York City and was a former Flotilla Commander. In 2002, she was presented with an award for Administrative Action for her work following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, including counseling families affected by 911. Her passion for sailing took her to many worldwide destinations including Turkey and she treasured scuba diving with her brother in Florida. During her retirement, she enjoyed frequenting the galleries, restaurants and shops of her beloved Greenwich Village where she resided for almost 40 years. She was the daughter of the late George J. and Margaret M. (Murray) Jackson of Weymouth Port, MA and sister of the late Paul Jackson of Miami, FL. She is survived by her brother Larry Jackson and his wife Ann Marie Jackson of Gainesville, FL as well as a loving aunt and uncle and many cousins in the Boston area. Funeral from the McDonald Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off Rte 3-A) Tuesday at 8:00 A.M. Funeral Mass to follow in Saint Jerome’s Church, North Weymouth at 9:00 O’clock. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Monday from 5:00 P.M.8:00 P.M. Interment to follow in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
