NEW ALBANY CARTER, DOROTHY SPICKARD HEATH, died Monday, June 30, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Marianne Heath Doyle, of Zionsville, IN. Dorothy, the daughter of William Porterfield and Stella Clift Spickard, of Crider, Caldwell County, KY, received a bachelor of arts in Music Education from Western State Teacher's College, Bowling Green, KY, in 1936 and a master's degree in Music Education from the University of Louisville. Married to Marion E. Heath in 1937, Mrs. Carter taught public school music in Kentucky and Indiana, retiring in 1977. After the death of her first husband, Mrs. Carter married Robert E. Carter, of New Albany. Upon his death, Mrs. Carter moved to Zionsville, IN, to be near her daughter, Marianne Heath Doyle and family. Mrs. Carter was actively involved in the music community in Southern Indiana, since 1946. Choir director for First Baptist Church and St. Mark's United Church of Christ, New Albany, Mrs. Carter was also the choral director and music teacher for Nathaniel Scribner Middle School, till her retirement, in 1977. Memberships include St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Alpha Club, Amaranth, Jennie Gephardt Hedden Music Study Club, Floyd County Retired Teachers and the Piankashaw Chapter of DAR. Piano teacher to hundreds, her last pupil was her great-grandson, Daniel Michael Doyle. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Marion E. Heath and Robert E. Carter; and son, Michael S. Heath. She is survived by her daughter, Marianne Heath Doyle; son-in-law, Guinn P. Doyle; grandsons, Noah V. (Stephanie), of Zionsville, IN, James H., of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandsons, Daniel M., Max J. and Mason B., of Zionsville, IN; and daughter-in-law, Judith L. Heath, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Also surviving are stepchildren, Robert Carter (Sandy), Rosemary Danishek (Rick) and Kay Whitehead (Neil). Her funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's United Church of Christ, 222 E. Spring St., New Albany, IN, with burial to follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring St., New Albany, IN. It was Dorothy's request that memorial gifts be sent to the Arts Council of Southern Indiana, 820 E. Market St., New Albany, IN, 47150.
