MURPHY Dorothy (O'Connor), 86, of Pompton Plains, passed away on May 24 after a short illness. She was born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where she lived until 1985 when she moved to Lions Head South in Brick. For 64 years she was married to George Murphy, who passed away last year.Dorothy was the heart of her big, loving family. She is survived by her five children, Mary Ellen Hassett of Huntington, New York, Susan of Madison, Connecticut, Dorothy Rooney of Rockville Centre, New York, George of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, and Donna Maresca of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, her sisters Dolores Murray, Grace Moffat, and Joan Piercey, her brother Gerard O'Connor, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her brother Billy. She was loved by all who knew her for her kindness, her gentle ways, her warmth, and her ability to accept new ideas. Throughout her life, she volunteered her time for many worthy organizations including the March of Dimes, the Girl Scouts of America, Lutheran Hospital, and Our Lady of Angels parish in Brooklyn. She enjoyed travel with friends and family, winters on Marco Island, Florida, golf, and reading. In recent years she enjoyed her life at Cedar Crest, which she was fortunate to share with three of her siblings, and the companionship and support of many new and old friends.A funeral Mass will be held 11 AM Thursday at the Cedar Crest Chapel, 1 Cedar Crest Village Drive, Pompton Plains. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark-Pompton Turnpike at Route 23, Pompton Plains.
