OWENS, The Reverend Dr. Dorothy MaddoxAge 69 of Nashville, TN, died September 14, 2013. Dr. Owens was born in Atlanta, GA on December 2, 1943. She was proud to be a fourth generation Atlantan, and pursued each season of her life with committed faith and determination. She was a graduate of the class of 1962 of The Westminster Schools, and attended Emory University earning a Bachelor of Arts, ranking in the top 8% of her class. Following a season as a wife and homemaker, she returned to her love of academics and medicine by pursuing advanced degrees at the Candler School of Theology at Emory, where she received a Master of Divinity Degree and was ordained by the Presbyterian Church. She then completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Vanderbilt University's Graduate School in 1996, at which time, she relocated to Nashville, TN. She was well published from her book, Hospitality to Strangers, which focused on empathy in the physician-patient relationship, to articles and research papers. She practiced as a certified clinical pastoral therapist and adjunct assistant professor in the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University until she retired in 2005 due to health concerns from a rare form of Leukemia. From childhood, her joy and passion in life were horses. From the early days competing in horseshows at Chastain Park; to fox hunting through the farmlands of undeveloped Alpharetta with Shakerag Hounds in the 1970s, and later with the Hillsboro Hounds in Tennessee. Any day with her horse and friends at the barn was good day. She is survived by her son, The Rev. Dr. William Davies Owens IV from Atlanta, currently residing in Boise, ID and his wife Holly; daughter, Dorothy Owens McKoy of Atlanta and her husband Herb; grandchildren, Alex McKoy, Hannah Owens, Liam Owens, Bennett Owens; and brother, Cone Morgan Maddox III, and her faithful Hearing Dog, Pearl. She Endured By The Grace Of God. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to International Hearing Dog, Inc., 5901 E. 89th Ave., Henderson, CO 80640 (www.ihdi.org). A visitation will take place on Friday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., at H.M. Patterson & Son-Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., Sandy Springs, GA 30328. A Memorial service will be Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 11 a.m., at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta. H.M. PATTERSON & SON, (404) 851-9900.
